Is It Okay To Drive On Empty?

You just got off work, hungry, tired, and work was a bust. All you want to do is go home, get some grub and relax. But suddenly, your low fuel light comes on. What do you do? Take some extra time and fill up? Or risk it for the biscuit and get gas on your way home tomorrow? At Route 20 Auto Repair, we recommend against driving longer than to the gas station for these important reasons. No matter how well you might know your vehicle, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

You Could Run Out Of Gas

The most obvious reason is that you could run out of gas. Sooner or later, your vehicle will just stop running if you do not supply it with sufficient gas. Imagine being on your way home, and you run out of gas. That sounds a lot worse than just stopping to fill up. Plus, you can get a snack while filling up, bonus! Additionally, running out of gas could cause damage to your fuel pump. Take the extra 15-20 minutes to get gas on your way home to save you time and money in the long run.

Your Vehicle Needs Gas To Run

For your vehicle’s engine to function properly, it needs a proportionate mixture of fuel and air. If you do not have fuel, then your engine just has air. We need air to live and function, but your engine needs fuel to run, not air. As previously mentioned, your fuel pump could be damaged by an insufficient amount of fuel. The fuel pump is designed to be submerged in fuel. If there is not enough fuel, the movement of the fuel pump will create friction which will lead to overheating and eventually failure. The fuel filter is neither easy nor cheap to replace. Even though gas prices are rising, a full gas tank is more affordable than a fuel pump replacement.

Fill Up While You Can

At Route 20 Auto Repair in Ashtabula, OH, we know that some days can be rough, but it is always worth it, in the end, to get gas when your light comes on. Risking it is not worth the downside of running your vehicle on empty.
