Signs My SUV Has an Electrical Problem

We recommend that you avoid driving your SUV if it has an electrical problem. If you continue to operate the utility vehicle, you may end up with an electrical fire. It is better to play it safe and have the vehicle towed to our shop. The following are signs that your SUV has an electrical problem that needs attention.

Accessory Problems

If you have started to have problems with the power accessories in your SUV, it’s possible that they are not receiving enough power from the electrical system. This can be a sign that the alternator is going bad or that there is something wrong with the wiring.

Battery Light

You may also end up with an illuminated battery light on the SUV’s dashboard. This light will turn on if the alternator or battery is dying. It will also turn on if there is another problem with the electrical system. We recommend that you drive straight to our shop if the battery light turns on.

Blown Fuses

Blown fuses are a sign that the alternator is producing too much voltage and overloading the electrical system. They can also be a sign that there is a problem with the portion of the electrical system that heads directly to that fuse. We will inspect the electrical system to determine the exact problem.

Burning Odors

An overheated electrical system will release burning odors. You will smell burning rubber and/or burning wires. If you pick up on this odor while you are driving your SUV, pull over and turn off the engine. Again, you do not want to run the risk of starting an electrical fire.

Dead Battery

Naturally, a dead battery is a problem within the electrical system. The reason why the battery is dead, however, determines the specific problem. For example, if the battery is too old, it is the problem. If the alternator is dying and failing to charge the battery, the alternator is the problem.

Difficult Starts

Whether it’s the battery or the alternator, you will have a hard time getting your SUV started if either is experiencing issues. In addition, a faulty electrical system can also fail to power the starter. Consequently, you won’t be able to get the SUV’s engine started at all.
