Your SUV’s alternator may start to go bad as the vehicle gets older. Generally, the factory alternator will last 10 years or 100,000 miles. If you’re looking at that time span or mileage on your SUV and you start to have the problems listed below, it’s possible that we need to replace the alternator. Do not worry. This is a fix that we can do relatively quickly to get you back on the road.
Accessory Troubles
The alternator is responsible for producing electricity. It produces up to 14.5 volts. Your SUV’s power accessories use this electricity in order to operate. These accessories include the power seats, the entertainment system, the navigation system, and the power windows.
Battery Troubles
The alternator also provides power to the battery in order to keep it charged. Without an alternator, the battery will discharge until it is dead. You may jump-start the battery to get it going, but it will die very quickly after word because, again, the alternator is not providing power to keep it charged.
Headlight Troubles
Another thing that the alternator helps to power is your SUV’s headlights. You may notice that it is difficult to see at night because the headlights are not shining brightly. You may also have a hard time reading the dashboard because the interior lights are dim.
Engine Noises
The alternator can start to make noises in the engine of your SUV if it needs to be replaced. If the alternator is wearing out on the inside, it may grind or growl. It may also squeal. Another thing that can squeal is the alternator belt. These are signs you need a new alternator.
Frequent Stalling
You also need a new alternator if the engine in your SUV is stalling frequently. Naturally, this can also be a sign that the spark plugs are worn, but if the alternator is involved, it is a sign that the spark plugs are not getting enough power from the alternator.
Hot Electricity
In some cases, a faulty alternator can produce too much power. This will overheat the electrical system in your SUV and may even blow some fuses. You want to avoid the possibility of an electrical fire, so head straight to our shop or have your SUV towed.
One last indication that your SUV needs a new alternator is an illuminated battery light on the dashboard. Bring your SUV to our shop today or give us a call if you suspect that there’s a problem with the alternator.
